The Importance of Segregation of Duties

Segregation of Duties (SoD) is the action of preventing incompatible responsibilities to be executed by one person. By enforcing your SoD rules, you will:

Ensure that no single employee has authorities on conflicting tasks.

Reduce risk of fraud associated with conflicting user access.

   Facilitate audits procedures.

Segregation of duties is achieved through assigning employee’s roles in a proper way during the design of internal controls. This requires individuals to be restricted only to perform functions that will not put the company at risk. This is the first step to prevent user’s access to sensitive information within their system which jeopardizes the financial well-being of the company.

Example of violating responsibilities:

·   The person who requests the purchase of goods or services should not be the person who approves the purchase.

·   The person who is setting up new employees should not be the person who is processing payroll.
